Why slogans don't help
Anyone can call themselves the top locksmith, and in a hurry it is tempting to call the first number you see. A few questions on the phone tell you far more.
Five things that matter
- A California license. Locksmith companies in California are licensed by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). Ask for the license number and check it on the BSIS website.
- A clear quote before work. A reputable locksmith gives you a price, or a clear range, before starting, and explains any change before doing extra work.
- Identification. Expect the locksmith to show ID, and to ask for yours.
- Real reviews. Look for consistent reviews on more than one site, and read the critical ones.
- A real local presence. Ask where they are based and whether they can describe your area.
Red flags
- A vague business name and no address
- A phone quote that is suspiciously low, followed by a much higher bill
- Refusing to give any price before arriving
- Drilling a standard lock straight away on a simple lockout
- Pressure to buy upgrades you did not ask for
Why local matters
A locksmith who works locally knows the area, the common lock types in local housing, and is easier to reach if something goes wrong later.
