Rekey first, replace when it's warranted
Rekeying swaps the pins inside a lock so only a new key works. It's usually cheaper than new hardware and keeps the finish you have. Rekeys start at $19.00 and basic lock changes at $25.00 on the price list, plus the service call fee.
Replace instead when a lock is worn out, damaged, or too light for the door it's on.
Grades, in plain terms
Door hardware is graded under ANSI/BHMA standards. Grade 1 is the most robust and suits front doors and the door from the garage. Grade 2 is a solid residential grade. Grade 3 is best kept for interior doors. A good strike plate with long screws into the stud matters as much as the grade.
Sliding doors and side gates
Anaheim homes often have a slider to the yard and a side gate. Slider latches are the classic weak point; a secondary lock or a properly cut bar adds a lot for little cost. Gate locks should open from inside without a key.
Renting?
Check your lease before changing anything. Many landlords rekey between tenants, or will let you arrange it if they get a copy of the new key.
