Choosing a deadbolt: grades, types and installation

A deadbolt is the most important lock on an exterior door. Here is how to pick one and make sure it is fitted properly.

  • Open every day, all hours
  • Quote before work begins
  • Home, business & car

Look at the grade

Deadbolts are commonly rated to ANSI/BHMA standards, from Grade 1 (most robust) to Grade 3. For front doors and garage entry doors, Grade 1 or Grade 2 is a sensible choice.

Single or double cylinder?

A single-cylinder deadbolt has a key outside and a thumb turn inside. A double-cylinder model needs a key on both sides. Double-cylinder locks can slow down escape in a fire, so check local codes and think carefully before choosing one for a door you would use to get out.

Keypad and smart deadbolts

These remove the need to carry keys and let you give temporary codes. Choose one with a mechanical key override and replace batteries on schedule.

Installation matters as much as the lock

  • The bolt should extend fully, at least one inch.
  • Use a reinforced strike plate with long screws into the wall stud.
  • The door must close without pushing for the bolt to throw freely.

Changing locks between tenants

For rental units, rekeying the existing deadbolt is often enough. Replace it if it is worn or below Grade 2. See our residential services.
